May 6th, 2020: Our Need to Control
It won't take long for businesses to reopen in many cities. People are both excited and afraid at the same time. It is like taking a trip through a haunted house. We know that it will be scary and yet our curiosity won't allow us to stop. We all know that things won't be the same as before the pandemic and yet we are wondering how things are going to be like.
People have different reasons to want things to be back to "normal" although most know deep down inside that nothing will be the same. We want to feel as if we can regain control of our own life. Some might even go further to suggest that they are fighting against the control of some hidden global agenda. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what position we take, it is still the same battle over the control of one's destiny.
Most brokenness in human relationships is also based on this very struggle. Men exercise power over their wives and women manipulate their husbands in their own maneuvers. It is the battle that began in Genesis with how Adam and Eve related to God and to each other. All societies and cultures have suffered from this form of destruction. It is a challenge to understand that men and women are created in the image of God and they are equal but not the same. The real struggle is that we want to be the god of our own life.
The casualty of war during the battle to gain control over one another is trust. Trust will be eroded in any relationship when one side feels as if he (she) is being abused by the others. That might be why we see these protests in different parts of Canada and the USA. The common theme is people don't trust their politicians and governments. That is a solemn thought when we consider democracy as the foundation of our nations. Our nations are both seriously divided and trust has become a sacred commodity.
Matthew 19:26 - "But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
