Sept 28th, 2020: Dreams and Broken Dreams
Broken dreams are part of life. It sounds depressing, but it is true. I
have met people who experience broken dreams in their marriages, their
careers, their ministries, and their aspiration. We all wish that life
would go the way we envision it to be.
Somebody told me jokingly
a few weeks ago that she would get married if she knew that 2020 would
turn out the way it is. Many people I know have experienced broken
dreams in 2020. Some have suffered a significant business downturn. Some
have experienced unexpected professional change. A few had to give up
the plan they had for their weddings. Some discovered that their
relationships with some people in their lives are not as good as they
thought. Some miss corporate worship because it is a significant part of
life. Some want to travel and found themselves traveling within the
confinement of their city.
Some people say that dreams
are bound to be broken. We dream because we think of the impossible
things and hope to achieve the unimaginable. Sometimes it works, and
sometimes it doesn't. We can dream because God created us. Our
brokenness has some damaging consequences in the way our dreams work
out. Dream and dealing with broken dreams are part of living in the dual
reality of being created by God and being drawn by own personal
desires.
I don't think we stop dreaming all together because of
our broken dreams. We should pursue our dream with vigor and commitment
while having the knowledge that our ability to dream is a privilege. It
is a manifestation of the beauty of our mind, our heart, and our soul.
Broken dreams sometimes make us reflect, reset, and restart our life
when we need to do that.
Maybe that is what God wants us to do
with 2020. It is time to see evil for what it is. It is also is time to
say to ourselves that this business of having faith in God cannot be
business as usual. 2020 is not a year of normalcy, and it might not be a
bad idea for us to dream about the greatness of God during such a time.
Acts 2: 17
"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out
my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your
young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.'"
