Dec 15th, 2020: Christmas Blessing - Be Aware of God's Presence

 

 

Increase Your Awareness of God's Presence

 

 

I am going to share a few conversations I had with people at different places this week so we can all have some ideas of what people are going through.


A) Talking to a young owner of a new Vietnamese restaurant in our neighborhood. She put all she saved into the business. She is now beyond stressed. She was trying very hard not to cry, and I felt for her. We then talked about ideas of how to increase take-out business. She asked me to pray for her and the restaurant when we said goodbye.


B) An elderly couple was a bit overwhelmed at a grocery store. Someone told them that they walked in the wrong direction. They obviously didn't see the arrows on the floor. Initially, they didn't understand what was going on. I asked them whether they had a shopping list. The lady told me she did. Then I asked them whether I could shop for them. The man whispered to me that it is harder to do anything. They were happy to let me do that when I asked them to hang around the book and the Christmas decorations areas. Being a private shopper was actually fun.


C) We went to bring our cans and bottles to a depot this weekend. It is one of the newer ones in town. We were surprised by the joyful spirit and the kindness of the young man who helped us. He was singing in his mother tongue, so we had no understanding of he was singing about. Whatever it was, it ought to be a happy song because of the big smile on his face. He told us to let him manage the whole bottle and can return and take it easy. It was a delightful end to a rather cold day.


If we pay attention to what is going around us, we will see God's Blessings.

 

Matthew 6:30-33

"But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Dealing with pain sometimes affects our ability and flexibility. A physiotherapist friend gave me a set of home exercises to help with that. They are simple yet intense at the same time. Dealing with our human brokenness sometimes affects our ability to see and hear God. Our commitment to spiritual disciplines must be at the core of our relationship with God. One of the disciplines I have been trying to embrace more fully is confession. It’s not just about recognizing where we have gone wrong; it’s about how we have chosen to live our lives independently from God. It’s about whether we truly want God to be part of our lives. The absence of meaningful confession will damage our freedom to experience intimacy with God. Sept 4th, 2024: Praying in Images

It has been a rough few days. Living in immense pain does not allow us much energy to think about anything. I ended up praying in images, and not many words came out of my mouth. Most of the images were of people I know. God knew that I was praying for them as their faces came to my mind. I did not need to mention the circumstances or situations of their lives—He knows. My heart was at peace as I ended my days with these images. He will take care of my body, and I know this because I was able to get some sleep. Tomorrow is in His hands.

Oct 1st, 2022: Be With Those Who Suffer

  Listening to a young woman who shared her experience of being raped repeatedly by a family member for over four years as a teenager made my heart ache. The man who did that was a leader of a church. He was imprisoned for seven months and released. He was her stepfather. Her mother chose to pick him over her after his release. Her life has changed forever. She had to go to a foster home. Her foster parents helped her with her restoration and her faith in God. Her supervisor at work asked me to see her because someone at work was inappropriate toward her. That triggered many emotions within her. I did not expect the story I heard from her. The meeting took longer than I thought, and it was toward the end of the day. She kept talking about her anger and the pain she felt when men treated her like a subject.
