Jan 30th, 2021: How to Define Human Decency?
Another day another sorrow as I read about President Biden's decision to fund abortion abroad. My feeling is based on my conviction that human beings at conception. Life has more than a physical dimension to its existence and meaning. Science has no moral authority to decide on how human life begins. There are metaphysical, psychological, theological, and philosophical dimensions to the meaning of life. I also understand that there are exemptions needed for having abortions in some circumstances. However, when the exception becomes the norm, the norm becomes the exception. My hope is to fight for the right of unborn people. Some people seem to think that we have the right and the privilege to classify them as non-human. We always run a risk of conducting genocide when that happens in human history.
Governments are now trying to fight hard against the Coronavirus around the world, and it looks like we are also trying to find a healthy balance. Some of us hope that the vaccine might help us cross over to the other side of this fight. Some of us are more cynical about the whole vaccination altogether. I consider scientific research is a gift of God when we conduct it with honesty and responsibility. I am always amazed at how human greeds can be displayed without shame. It was leaked to the media in Canada this week that Pfizer has asked the Canadian Government for special tax exemption right in the middle of the vaccination process. No one ever knows how much money Pfizer will make with this vaccine when many other businesses have gone bankrupt because they cannot open. Asking for a tax exemption right now is shameful and tasteless. It also fuels more power to many conspiracy theorists.
Human suffering tends to reveal both the greatness and the wickedness of humanity. We are now at that crossroads of human history. Can we honestly say that we respect all human lives equally? Can we really say that the threat of Coronavirus is the most damaging one we have to face at this point in human history? Maybe, we should consider the real virus that has been corrupted human hearts and minds. It has been behind all of the world's destruction since the beginning of time. The one that says to us that we can take the place of God. We can decide the true meaning and value of life.
Job 33: 4
"The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
Psalm 139: 13-16
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."
