March 10th, 2021: Overcome Idolatry

Idolatry and Me: Support for those struggling with homosexuality

Good men and women do fail. Sometimes it is hard to fathom the reasons behind their moral failures. Some have secret lives that no one knows. Some have intense struggles with one or more aspects of sin. Some believe that they are untouchable because of the adoration they have received from their followers. Some are living a lie. Some have listened to wrong people who have no courage to confront them. I have encountered many of these stories in 2020. We try to understand, and yet it appears as if there is nothing to understand. We need to acknowledge that broken people do hurt one another.

It is common for people to worship people whom they appreciate and respect. The problem for us is that we practice idolatry by doing that. We let these men and women take the place of God in our lives. We are guilty in some ways as we set them up to fail by doing so. Some people don't have the wisdom not to allow that to get into their heads. They believe in the deception of others. It is like walking through a tunnel of darkness without any light. Everyone starts shouting about where the rest should go. The world we live in is full of idolatry. Sometimes it begins with a heart that refuses to be filled by God.

Having wisdom is to know how to walk away when we know that people we care for have been confused between being thankful to God and worshiping a false perception of God. We need to be firm about letting people know that the time for them to be under our care is over, and it is time for them to seek counsel from other men and women of God. It is a critical decision to become less and less in these folks' lives so that they can see Jesus more clearly. It is the needed light in the very same tunnel of darkness. It might just be a small gesture that can create an incredible impact on someone's life. The shouting will stop, and there will be a new focus and hope.

Proverbs 6: 23

"For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life."

Proverbs 4: 18

"But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day."
