March 5th, 2021: Modesty

Should Church Leaders Ever Address a Woman about Modesty? -

Modesty is essential in how we appreciate beauty. When celebrities decide to wear outfits that leave nothing to the imagination, we have left with silence or outrage. When we take the time and consider that response, we might learn that modesty might be the foundation for meaningful human interaction. Its absence is the power behind the push for absurdity.

I have met some amazing men and women who have accomplished great things in their lives. Some of them are more humble and modest than others. I always remember those who can engage in a heart-to-heart conversation with me about issues that matter to them. It was a stark contrast to those who are pompous with self-conceit.

So what I remember about these modest folks?

Their beauty is not in what we can see. The depth of the hidden beauty is far more intriguing than what has been portrayed by the media. It is not about what they do. It is about the relationships they have with people in their lives. Some mention their relationships with God as well.

They are able to look beyond internal and external temptation, have the freedom not to take themselves seriously. Their healthy self-awareness keeps their sanity in check. They decide not to listen to the whispering of lies and listen to the voices of those who love them.

They have the freedom to laugh at their foolishness and acknowledge that they have to learn more about the nature of wisdom. They have a deep appreciation for their roots. They are gracious people because they embrace the grace of God in their lives.

We need modesty in a culture dominated by anger, confusion, and demand for privileges and rights. When we are modest, we realize that none of us is right always. We cannot grant ourselves the privileges to condemn others. Modesty is a guideline for a healthy and growing life.

1 Peter 3: 3-4

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornments, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.  4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."
