March 9th, 2021: Decency
There is no news in the media these days. It doesn't matter what news channel we are watching, people are just attacking one another. There is very little substance about issues and ideas. People only talk about issues so that they can antagonize each other.
Let me share with you one of the quotes from Socrates:
" Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people."
Can it be true that our minds have become so feeble that we cannot discuss ideas and share our thoughts without taking sides? Somehow we use labels as a mean to convey our thoughts and ideas. It is also amusing to find out how much money some of these folks make by just doing that. They ought to provide a service that people are looking for these days. What does that tell us about the mental and spiritual health of our society?
Sports news is also more popular these days due to boredom and isolation. So what have we been watching? A collection of past events and stories about different athletes' personal lives. We find ourselves going there because we prefer numbing our minds instead of facing the harsh reality of being isolated. Sometimes we use that to create a form of escapism.
The interview that Oprah had with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is another example of this. Amid a pandemic and we are concerned ourselves with a couple's story about the problems of their privileged life and their desire to create a brand for themselves. What happens to wisdom? I am cynical indeed. I am praying for the day when human decency is celebrated and restored. Misuse of human suffering is deplorable.
1 John 2: 16
"For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world."
