April 17th, 2021: What Happens When Darkness Comes
Charles Spurgeon is a well-known English preacher whose writing still impacts many Christian today. This quote from him is one of my favourite quotes from him.
We can see in the light. There is no guessing about what we might not see. We can move forward with some certainty. We can stop and don't have to worry that someone might hit us from behind. It is not hard to trust God when there is no unknown. Life is pretty set, and we are in a good position.
When the darkness comes, it is a different story. It impacts our soul and can be very troubling. Our soul can be so empty because of pervasive darkness. It feels as if no one hears our cry. We stare into the nothingness of life, and there is no echo.
Darkness damages our interaction with one another as deception takes the front-row in relationships, conceit plays into the pomposity of life, and hatred masquerades itself as the pursuit of one's rights. Darkness takes over the airwaves day and night. It is the source of our severe depression.
God is the light, and the darkness will never understand that light. Having faith is to be willing to do through that very darkness without having the desire or the fear to embrace it. We aim for that light while knowing that we will suffer from the presence of that darkness. That is faith.
Luke 1: 79
"To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."
Ephesians 5: 8-9
"For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true.)"
