May 9th, 2021: Happy Mother's Day!
"Happy Mother's Day!"
Good mothers are not just gifts to their children, but they are also gifts to the world. Many Christians around the world today have embraced the essence of who God is as Mother. It is not about gender issues or making a statement about the liberation of women. When we fail to understand that the entire Bible is one narrative about God, we fail to appreciate how it provides us with an immense conceptual understanding of who God is, both male and female. It is about the essence of who God is to us, His children. The Bible has many references to God as female and His female attributes.
On this Mother's Day, I will focus on this one about Jesus and His lamentation over Jerusalem:
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing." (Luke 13:34).
Mothers protect their children the way God protects us. Good mothers can be vicious toward those who threaten their kids. They would lay their lives down for the lives of their kids as Jesus does for humanity. Good mothers always think ahead and warn their children of potential harm. Jesus does that via the revelation of the Scripture and the working of the Holy Spirit.
Mothers gather their kids. Good mothers would love to have their kids home during the holidays. When one of the kids decides to be away from home for the wrong reasons, a mother goes through some intense anguish. Have you ever thought about how God feels by seeing what happens in our world today?
The wings of a mother are a place of comfort for the kids. They will grow to become men and women of God with that comfort. It is the kind of comfort that will challenge them to know what it means to be with God and for God. God offers us comfort in belonging to Him. He does not grant us the freedom to be Godless leaders of the world.
Enjoy this day and be thankful for your mother as you learn to discover the essence of God in them.
