July 28th: Resilience

I had a conversation with a police officer about what it takes for him to do about his daily duty considering the negativity lately about police officers and policing. We ended up talking about resilience in policing. He comes from a long family tradition of law enforcement. This picture summarizes our conversation in many ways.

We need to know who is with us and whom we can depend on in order to have the courage to move ahead with our responsibilities. He mentioned the advice and the encouragement he has received from his family and his church family. He would not pay too much attention to the negative talks from those who don't know him and don't care about him and his family.

We need to be aware of the challenges of the environment and find ways to work through them. There are always open doors when we search and work hard to find them. We need to take advantage of these opportunities. He talked about being intentional about building relationships with the community. He has discovered new ways of being an officer by helping teenagers.

Nothing can be more challenging than being a police officer these days. The political and social environments can appear so unsupportive. We still witness some incredible acts of kindness and respect from our officers. Let us pray for their resilience as they go about their work.

We need to know where we receive our spiritual nourishment. These two flowers are happy to be in one sunlight. They need it. The officer shared with me how to see God in his involvement with kids outside his work. He becomes more and more aware of how God has used these opportunities to nourish his soul and his commitment to an officer.

Exodus 15: 26

Saying, "If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer."

2 Timothy 3: 1-5

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
