Sept 25th, 2021: A Taboo, Why?

Tattooing is a taboo topic among some Christians. Personally, if I tell you I have a theological conviction against tattoos, it might just be my way of hiding from the fear of being judged by my cultural heritage. I don't have one because I just don't dare to let someone poke my body with a sharp instrument. I have encountered many people with tattoos for various reasons.

I hired somebody who was an inmate many years ago. He had tattoos all over his body. He told me that each image had a story about a significant experience in prison behind it. Some of the tattoos were better than others. I appreciated the stories behind them because I learned a lot about how God revealed Himself to this fellow through his interaction with other inmates.

A young widow decided to have a tattoo of her late husband's face on her belly. She showed it to me (Too much info, I know). I did not know what to tell her except asking whether she sees herself remarried. What would happen then? Sometimes some wisdom can prevent some hassle in the future.

A young person told me about her tattoos recently. One of them is about a good friend who passed away suddenly in an accident a couple of years ago. Another one is a reminder that she needs to live every day fully for God. When I think about what she told me, her tattoos are about her relationships with God and others.

Having a tattoo or not is like anything else we do in our life. It depends on our motive and reason for doing it.

1 Corinthians 3:16: "Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?"
