Sept 6th, 2021: Enough is Enough. It is Time to Stand Up!


What I am about to share with you has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the sanctity of human life. It has nothing to do with taking away women's right to choose. It is about protecting my right to exercise my moral conviction. It has nothing to do with the accessibility of abortion for those who choose to do so. It is about providing help and support for women who either struggle with their abortion decisions or suffer from the emotional trauma of their choices.


Abortion is legal in Canada. However, it doesn't mean that people who morally have taken the opposite stand should be shot down and discriminated against. When we take a stand against smoking, it doesn't mean that we take away the choice of smokers. When we fight against drunk driving, it doesn't mean we take away the option from those who like to drink. It is about having conversations about the potential consequences of our choices.


The Liberal Party in Canada is making it clear to us, who are against abortion, that we will pay our price for that. It suggests that the Government of Canada will not grant a charity status for any organization that has anti-abortion in its mandate. That is a direct attack on many Christian churches and many other religious bodies and non-profit organizations. It undermines the core of human values by taking away our options to live out our moral choices.


We are living under the power of tyranny with the facade of women's right to choose. The Government of Canada should not assume that it speaks for all women in Canada when it comes to this issue. It is true that the majority of women in Canada support a woman's right to choose. However, the foundation of moral decisions is more than just a democratic process. The majority can be wrong, and that is a historical fact.


2 Timothy 4: 1-4

"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths."

It has been a rough few days. Living in immense pain does not allow us much energy to think about anything. I ended up praying in images, and not many words came out of my mouth. Most of the images were of people I know. God knew that I was praying for them as their faces came to my mind. I did not need to mention the circumstances or situations of their lives—He knows. My heart was at peace as I ended my days with these images. He will take care of my body, and I know this because I was able to get some sleep. Tomorrow is in His hands.

Dealing with pain sometimes affects our ability and flexibility. A physiotherapist friend gave me a set of home exercises to help with that. They are simple yet intense at the same time. Dealing with our human brokenness sometimes affects our ability to see and hear God. Our commitment to spiritual disciplines must be at the core of our relationship with God. One of the disciplines I have been trying to embrace more fully is confession. It’s not just about recognizing where we have gone wrong; it’s about how we have chosen to live our lives independently from God. It’s about whether we truly want God to be part of our lives. The absence of meaningful confession will damage our freedom to experience intimacy with God. "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy." - Proverbs 28:13

May 18th, 2020: Why Forgiveness?

  A young man called me last night and he was tormented by his relationship with his mother. It is not because she was a horrible mom. It was unresolved grief that is caused by his dad's suicide a few years ago. Emotionally, he blames parents for his father's death although he knows intellectually that it is not right. I knew the father a bit because his mother and her family came to see me for help when they first arrived in Canada. He was a brilliant physician and who was quite loved by people of a small northern town in Alberta. He was awkward in some ways and very uncomfortable in social conversations. This young man has had many conversations with me ever since the suicide. His father's death has been a major topic of our time together. Most of our conversation yesterday was about forgiveness.
