Oct 18th, 2021: Undesirable Calls

Have you ever been irritated by a soliciting phone call just as you are about to sit down for dinner? It feels as if these calls violate our personal space and time. It is even more troublesome when the person who calls is perky and happy to tell you what you need and miss. That is nothing close to the truth.

Marketing study can be so grossly misguided. It is true that solicit call chance to get people on the phone at dinner time might be higher than any other time of the day. However, it is also true that they might not get the most favorable response. We are not in the mood for a sale pitch. We need some relaxation and time to catch up with our family.

We have become wearier about fraudulent calls these days. Most people don't take calls from numbers they don't know. If we do, we already have some resistance towards what we are about to hear. The chance for success is low. Why should they try to call when people have decided not to listen anyway? There is something disrespectful about this approach.

Political parties are not free from this form of ignorance either. We are not that keen on thinking about rating our Prime Minister's performance while having our dinner. For me, that will kill my appetite. We cannot give any meaningful answers about policies in a 5-minute survey or poll. It needs more time and not at dinner time.

Proverbs 10: 23

"Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding."

Proverbs 23: 9

"Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words."
