Oct 26th, 2021: Motherhood is Part of God's Nature
I just learned that a pastor, whom I protected and encouraged during the first two years of his first charge, told his board of elders and some others that I am not a Christian because I propagate the notion of the Motherhood of God. He did not have the honesty to have a face and face conversation with me about the topic.
Why Motherhood of God? You might ask. It is not about denying the Fatherhood of God. It is about having a better understanding of who God is when we see God from that perspective. It is not about being untrue to what is written in the Holy Scripture. It is about having a comprehensive understanding of what God says to us in His word.
God is neither male nor female. God is the author of all goodness within His eternal nature, and our understanding will never define who God is. The best possible approach is to have the freedom to attribute all good and beauty to God.
The Catholic Catechism might have something to teach us in this conversation:
"By calling God “Father,” the language of faith indicates two main things: that God is the first origin of everything and transcendent authority; and that He is at the same time goodness and loving care for all His children. God’s parental tenderness can also be expressed by the image of motherhood (Isaiah 66:13; Psalm 131:2), which emphasizes God’s immanence, the intimacy between Creator and creature. The language of faith thus draws on the human experience of parents. " (Catechism, 239)
I am now opening the door for others to crucify me because they believe that Catholics are not Christians. It never ends. However, I will not be distracted by those who attempt to fit God and His essence into their comfort. They will fail to communicate the unfathomable vastness of His nature. None of our languages can capture the complete knowledge of God.
Galatians 4: 19
"My little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!"
Genesis 1: 7
"Humankind was created as God’s reflection: in the divine image God created them; female and male, God made them."
