Oct 5th, 2021: Music: A language of Our Heart and Mind

Music helps us to be in touch with our roots. I sing Vietnamese songs sometimes to make sure that I can still speak my mother tongue. Whenever I listen to Vietnamese music, my mind is flooded with memories. Some Christian hymns also help me to recall the early part of my Christian journey.

When my father was close to the end of his life on earth, music brought him comfort and rest. He was always quiet and reflective when he listened to it. Somehow it gave him the tranquility that he needed before leaving this life.

Many folks have told me how Christian music brings them healing and peace. It is about spiritual and emotional healing. They seem to be able to face the pain and the hardship of their physical illness.

Music also grants us the privilege to be free from the burden of the world temporarily. It happens to me often whenever I drive and listen to music. I am able to pray a lot more freely. There is a whole new set of language when that happens. It is that the language of a heart that longs for understanding and compassion. There is an astounding truth in music because of that.

James 5: 13
"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise."

Psalm 71: 23
"My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed."
