My niece resigned from Quebec Health as a dietitian because she had become sick and tired of the hypocrisy and caring towards seniors. She told me that everyone was in an uproar about the lack of accountability and support for nursing homes in our country. Not much has changed. It appears as if we are content to let things be. Getting rid of our unborn babies at one end and intentionally terminating our seniors at the other end seems to be the perfect solution to reduce the world population. The truth is they don't have anything with the world population. They might have something to do with us.
Consumption might be the first question we need to examine. Everyone talks about the environment these days, and no one seems to be open to the idea that we have to learn how to consume less if we really care about the environment. Young people are very keen on carbon footprint. Yet, many don't seem to have any struggle in traveling the world and having destination weddings.
We should learn to deny our privileges. It does not make things right because we can afford it. Would we turn down our entitlement so that others might have their daily food and shelters? Equality is not something we give to others. It is our decision to share what we have received from God with others. It is not about showing pity towards others. It is about understanding that nothing we have is actually ours, to begin with.
Some people think that our failure to control population growth will create environmental, economic, and political problems. That might be true to some extent, but we cannot blame these factors for our moral choices that damage our environment, economy, and political structures. The spiritual vacuum at the core of our politics, education, economic structure, and healthcare has created more challenging factors in dealing with world problems.
Maybe we are dealing with a new set of struggles when God is absent. It is like teaching our kids to be responsible for household chores. Here are some of the objections we might get from our kids:
"It is not fair". Well, it will never be.
"I did it last week." The economy of responsibilities.
"I don't want to do it." It is my right not to do certain things.
"Why do we have to do it every week?" Our reasoning is critical.
"I am too busy." Priority issues.
What are our objections while trying to balance our rights with our responsibilities?
Luke 16:10
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”
