I have been thinking a lot about people who lost their jobs just before the holidays. I met some of them because I was the one who brought them the unfortunate news. Some seemed to cope with it better than others. One of them told me quietly that he and his wife will be ok because they have been careful with their finance. We sat down and talked a bit more about the notion of what it means to have enough and what happens when we don't think we do.
We will never have enough if we believe that our desire for infinite gain is justifiable.
We will never have enough if we are not content with what we have.
We will never have enough if we are afraid that others might have more than we do.
We will never have enough if we are unhappy with who we are.
We will never have enough if we are motivated by the thought of missing out in life.
We will never have enough if we believe that we are in control of our destiny.
This Christmas reminds us one more time that we might have more than we need and yet still feel a sense of emptiness because of the lack of relational interaction with family and others. Maybe, the only thing that we might never have enough of is our love for one another.
Maybe one of the Christmas Blessings should be our desire to have more of God in our life.
Isaiah 58:6-7
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
