July 7th, 2021: Moral and Spiritual Mutations

Some good friends told me that I look like a teenage mutant ninja turtle after seeing this picture. How flattering! Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman created these characters in 1984. The question I have had for myself is whether we can be mutants. Some would say "yes" to this question based on what we have done with our scientific and genetic endeavors.

In brief, mutant means "An organism, cell, virus, or gene resulting from a genetic mutation." It might be short-sighted to study the nature of mutation according to physical science only. We have witnessed both moral and spiritual expressions of mutation in recent years. Let us consider a few of them.

The cancellation of the traditional family is one of my them. The increasing coverage in this area threatens people who believe in the value of traditional family. Somehow things that used to be cherished are now questioned.

Some people applaud lawlessness. The US went through the whole summer of 2020 with intense violence and destruction. Somehow some TV News Networks considered it acceptable. There was no call for order restoration. There were more calls for the condemnation of the police.

The confusion and the rise of popularity in cryptocurrencies also reveal the new wave of attack against traditional financial institutions. The currency mutants are trying to take over traditional banking. It also brings to light some of the corruptions in the global financial business.

The "New Normal" is the best way for the world to describe God's divine action in the world today. It might just be a part of the spiritual process that God prepares us for what to come. It can be exciting to some and terrifying to others. In this new reality, we should prepare to expect the unexpected.

Some people even say that God's miracles can be viewed as the new chain series of "Fake News" according to the world. When we fail to believe in God's plan to redeem the world, we will follow some other messiahs. We talk about equality as if we are its author. We talk about redemption as if we have the power to forgive sins. We talk about justice as if we have arrived.

As we research the coronavirus as we try to overcome COVID-19, we might want to take some time to consider the spiritual mutations that have impacted us.

Psalm 2: 1-3

"Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
against the Lord and his anointed, saying,
"Let us break their chains
    and throw off their shackles."
