Oct 11th, 2021: Problems with Supply Chain?

The talk about how our supply chain challenges might affect our Christmas wish list is rather disturbing. Many parts of the world will be glad that they have daily food. Are we really that worried about our Christmas wish list? It tells us our priorities. It is rather sad. However, I have a hard time taking this news at its face value.

Maybe it is a ploy from some corporate marketing ideas to float this kind of fear so it can trigger a shopping frenzy before Black Friday. It is cynical, I know. It is one way to jump-start our economy. It is a concern for some people when they think about not being able to buy things. Maybe we are being prepared for a significant increase in inflation. Scarcity always brings about price jumps.

Maybe we are out of touch with reality altogether. In some parts of our country, people don't even have clean water. Many charities that care for the homeless have been appealing for donations because the need has increased drastically. We are still dealing with our emotional and physical fatigue in dealing with COVID-19. Thinking about a materialistic Christmas is somewhat shallow.

Maybe we are bored, and we need to have some shopping therapy in a big way. It is not that hard to be hooked by some offers online. We want to gain some sense of control, and shopping is good therapy for that. There is always some futility in boredom. We are all aware of how this pandemic has affected people's mental health. We have to grab something if we only stare at loneliness and desperation.

1 Timothy 6: 6-10

"Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs."
