Oct 8th: Memories to Treasure

We are in Montreal visiting our youngest daughter and my family. It has been a year since we are able to return. I have a lot of memories of this beautiful city. God did many things in my life during the years I was here.

I came to realize that we cannot find God. We might search for Him with our intellectual exercises. We might gain some perception of who God is. We might want to develop some sense of spirituality only to discover that we cannot fill the emptiness of our hearts. God will have to find us and reveal Himself to us through the peoples and circumstances of our lives. It is also true that God will show Himself to us supernaturally as well.

I learn that God is the One without any cultural bias, social-economic discrimination, and emotional judgment. My first ministry appointment was to work with international university students at McGill and Concordia. We met many students from Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. I had a fascinating conversation with a Ph.D. student from South Africa about redemption in 1987, and we are still in touch today. A businesswoman recently called me from Hong Kong to talk about the challenges she has to face with her faith. We met in 1986 when she was doing her undergrad study at Concordia.

It reminds me that God is faithful, and we all need that reminder these days. We do not always have a comprehensive picture of where we are going and the meaning of life. We can only decide to walk with God after God finds us, and that is a daily experience. We can find peace when we are willing to embrace that walk with Him.

Ephesians 2:12-13

“Remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
